UPDATE: Jurassic Park canceled for France, look to Canada for SteelBook

Hey folks! Great news for fans of those Universal Trilogies or other Universal steelbooks. It appears that Universal France will be releasing a wave of steelbooks in October of 2011.

At press time, it’s unclear if these steelbooks will indeed all be G2 (or blu-ray) sized steelbooks. Many
of our collectors have gotten a bit nervous given that the initial or preliminary steelbook artwork appears to be G1 (dvd) sized.

Please remember that Universal releases are typically region free discs.

Titles currently announced include:

Jason Bourne Trilogy
Russell Crowe Trilogy
The Mummy Trilogy
Inglorious Basterds Horizontal Steelbook
Mesrine 1&2

Look for this new wave of steelbooks on October 12, 2011 and don’t forget about the Jurassic Park Trilogy, also by Universal, with a release date yet to be announced.

Inside Look: The Book of Eli German Collectors Edition

One of my favorite movies in the past year. The Book of Eli got a glorious collectors edition from Germany. What I like most of this collectors edition as it has stuff that pertains to the movie. The mini flask represents that of his water canteen. The Book is a play-on for the Book in itself which he carried throughout the movie. This book however is just a mere notebook that looks like some odd graph paper. The other booklet includes some really nice photos and German writing. Thankfully it has some really cool photos since I dont read German. The steel itself is stunning, embossed lettering for “ELI” and the back is one of the best looking backs I’ve ever seen on a steelbook. Throw on the spine and inside artwork from the Canadian FutureShop Book of Eli version and you’d have one helluva a Book of Eli customized steelbook. (The spine of the Canadian version is that of a book spine, pretty cool.) The Horizontal Book of Eli German Blu-ray Steelbook was first reported for release back in May.

Region Free Report: A Look at a Few Recent Titles Confirmed

Recently confirmed by reader Dave Fletcher, The Book of Eli (Canadian Release from FutureShop) has been declared Region Free. Along with The Book of Eli, an older FutureShop title Public Enemies was also confirmed region free.

Also reader Bram Brouwers has confirmed that Total Recall from Holland, Moonwalker from Germany, and Shutter Island from France are all region free.

Do you know of any titles on our list that are region free and not yet confirmed? Help us keep it updated by submitting the info via the Contact/Submit Form. Remember, we don’t just go by what is on the back of the case as that has been proven wrong before supported by our Blu-ray SteelBook Region Coding article example.

The Invictus French Blu-ray Steelbook has been confirmed to be region free. Along with this title is the French version of Minority Report and the German edition of Zombie Land.

FutureShop Iron Man Blu-ray SteelBook

Just catching up on a rather old but famous steelbook that I’m honestly shocked that we didnt cover once before. The FutureShop Iron Man Blu-ray Steelbook is one of the most sought after collectibles in the world of blu-ray steelbooks. With the obvious soon to come release of Iron Man 2 in blu-ray steelbook form it only begs two questions. Will the value of this steelbook rise? Or will it drop immensely when a possible rerelease is made much like that of when they coupled Twilight together with New Moon. Only time awaits.

Gladiator French Blu-ray SteelBook Re-release?

It seems as if Amazon.fr is looking to re-release Gladiator in Blu-ray steelbook form. Their original release is entirely region free, but had no inside artwork and no shine to the shield or sword like the German version did. On the same note, the German version came with the ugly (imo) fsk logo on the case. The best version, (imo) is the Taiwan version which came not only with a shiny metallic like shield and sword on the front but a really cool slip cover to boot. 2012 has made its way to Blu-ray disc format and like most blockbuster films releasing these days somewhere some country will put it in steelbook fashion. In this case, many countries have jumped on board with this release. (This is starting to become a popular trend!) Amongst the many countries is Canada and their giant retailer Future Shop. Below is an in depth look at the 2012 SteelBook release.
